The Whale team has been recognized by CIM Ireland for the 3rd year running, by being awarded their Marketing Excellence award in the Engineering Sector for their successes in establishing Whale 3D – Technical Services as a rapidly growing new business segment.
Around the world, the way that companies design and manufacture products is going through an engineering revolution. Bangor based company Whale is at the forefront of this revolution with its 3D Printing and Complete Technical Service Department.
3D Printing, Rapid Prototyping or Additive Manufacturing as it is sometimes known, is a new and quickly progressing technology. From an initial new product development idea, a product design is then created on computer using 3D modelling software (such as Autocad). This software file is sent to the specialist 3D printer machine which works by building up solid objects in thousands of wafer-thin layers. The printer lays down a fine layer or light-reactive plastic, which is immediately set into place by a beam of UV light passing overhead. The result… a solid three-dimensional product (even with moving parts) created in a single piece production without any assembly. One of Whale’s 3D printing Experts, Jim Sargent explains the benefits:-
‘Since introducing our advanced multi-material 3D printing machines, we are able to deliver closer than ever simulation of end products. We can make waterproof, transparent, plastic or rubber parts all printed in a single piece. Not only have we sped up our time to market for new products by on average 20%, but we have also increased our throughput of product launches by a third . Our design team are able to stretch their creativity, test, refine and prove out new design concepts, and enhance our overall product development capabilities. All these benefits are the foundation of our Whale 3D Printing Service to clients.’
