Embedded Software Engineer

ABOUT THE JOB

The embedded software engineer role involves designing, developing and maintaining software for microcontroller-based products.

Whilst the role is primarily focused on embedded software development, some projects may also involve computer and smartphone app development.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on intelligent control systems that drive some of the most advanced and user-friendly products on the market, boldly setting Whale apart from its competitors.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of products utilising latest tools and technologies. Projects can involve safety critical control, wireless technology, wired protocols, user interfaces, control theory, control system simulations, and other exciting technologies.

Heavily investing in R&D enables Whale to stay at the forefront of innovation and shape the technological landscape of the markets in which we operate.

The role will involve working closely with various other functions (quality, marketing, purchasing and production) to develop and agree product specifications, and to ensure that these specifications are met in terms of performance, cost, timescales and reliability.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

An experienced embedded software engineer to contribute to new product development at Whale and help support existing products.

Candidates should be educated to at least degree level (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, Physics, or a closely related discipline.

Candidates must have software development experience in embedded C programming, and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Educated to at least degree level (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, Physics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience developing software for a microcontroller platform.
  • Good experience in new product development.
  • Be enthusiastic and keen to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity and thoroughness in all you do.
  • Display strong interpersonal skills at all levels.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • 2+ years embedded C programming experience.
  • Control theory knowledge and experience e.g. PID control.
  • Knowledge of electronic hardware.
  • Experience using software version control tools e.g. Subversion, Git.
  • C# and Visual Studio experience.
  • Experience using Matlab/Simulink.
  • Experience developing safety critical software.
  • Knowledge of software safety standards.
  • Project management experience.
